Name: Herbert “Hyde” Russet
Description: Hyde is a young man of 18, standing around 5’, with short brown hair, with deep brown eyes to match. In fact his entire appearance seems to reflect the affinity with bronze his world has. His steampunk style clothing are all composed of earthy colors, an iconic pair of goggles generally hanging around his neck, though he didn’t actually partake in any of his nations industrious actions. He isnt a very imposing fellow, but thats what happens when ones favorite hobby is reading books. He has a type of boy-next-door charm to him, and his knowledge of many manuscripts has given him a type of wise, informed air, though not stern by any means.
History: Hyde was about five when he came to realize his powers of Spark were a bit stronger than those of his classmates. It was something he almost immediately took to keeping a secret, even from his family members. This secretiveness lead to him not having very many friends as a kid. However it wasn’t so much from fear of being made fun of as it was just not going out of his way to interact. He easily faded into the background. That guy everyone knew, but didn’t really -know-.
The person he was closest with was his mother. From a very young age, she instilled in him a great passion for reading. She would read stories to him as a child, and once he was old enough to make sense of script for himself, he would spend hours at the library, simply perusing books. Reading became a big part of his life, and likewise, so did his mother.
Unfortunately, Hyde’s mom died young. Who would have thought that with such a kind demeanor she had such a weak heart. And naturally as with the loss of any loved one, Hyde went into mourning. His dad comforted him endlessly, but Hyde ultimately needed to sort out his own feelings. And that’s exactly what he did.
Jackal was a stuffed animal Hydes mom had given him when he was just an infant, aptly named as he was a jackal with a small pair of wings. The loss of his mother caused Jackal to become one of Hydes best companions. He breathed life into the animal, who, being an extension of his own spirit, helped ease his feelings and gather himself. However, he couldn’t bring himself to remove the Spark he had placed within the small animal.
And so, Jackal and Hyde became inseparable. The little animal would pretend to be inanimate whenever someone was near, but was always with Hyde. As he grew older he would be kept inside Hydes backpack to avoid questions, but he was always there when he needed someone to talk to.
And so his life went. Hyde rose to be valedictorian of his class, gaining relative fame from his classmates for his smarts and overall cheery demeanor. His life went by rather normally for a person of his world, that is until he met the acquaintance of one Lady Ink...
Abilities: Hyde, like the rest of the citizens of Magnanimum, uses ‘Spark’. Spark is the power of ones soul, and the people of Magnanimum use this power to give some of their own life to inanimate objects. The average Magnanian isn’t able to bring to life much. Giving part of ones soul to an object weakens the soul of the giver. If one used too much, it could result in the users body falling into a coma. A body can’t exist without a soul for long. At the most, the average Magnanian can get a door to open, or lightweight objects to float to them, though prolonged animation is incredibly draining. Because Spark comes from ones soul, utilizing the power of Spark while a person is angry or upset can cause animations to become erratic and unrelieable.
Magnanians who train all their lives to more efficently harness the power of spark are known as ‘Volts’ and use their abilities to power ‘Machina,’ large constructs specifically made for Spark power, which are used for industrial purposes.
Hyde is different.
Hyde was born under the alignment of his planets two moons and the sun (a fact he was clueless about for the majority of his life) which somehow granted him a great deal more spark than anyone on the planet. Hyde can animate many different objects at once, which would easily cause any other Magnanian to fall comatose. His power is not limitless, of course. While he could animate, say, something the size of an automobile with relative ease, he wouldn’t be able to animate multiple objects of similar size, or something the size of a small house without a great deal of concentration.
Because Spark is the distribution of a persons soul, its important to know that re-animation is not possible. A persons spirit cannot be regained once it has passed on.
Spark appears as a current of white electricity flowing from the bestower into the object being animated.
Construct: Hyde was chosen by Lady Ink, and received the construct of a key. As automobiles do not exist in his world, this key can be used to open chests, doors, and other locks. However Hyde has no use for a universal key, as animating a door and willing it to open itself tends to work just fine as a lockpick. No, to Hyde, a key represents the means to open metaphorical doors, which lead one to new situations or opportunities. A door opened with the key will have on its other side something new and significant to Hyde’s journey. At times it may just be something small, like an item. Other times, a person may be behind the door. Or perhaps the door will lead to a completely different location than what it usually leads to. The ‘oppritunities’ which the key gives acess to are not always positive, and therefore the key is used sporadically.
It should be noted Hyde himself is currently unaware of the keys true properties. At the moment he believes it just opens doors. Its actual affects stem from his subconscious.
